Sugar and Skin

November 3, 2010

I came across a great article by Dermalogica that reminded me again of the adage, ” You are what you eat.”  We all know how seductive and addictive sugar can be but did you know that  sugar impacts the function and quality of skin?

“Collagen, essential to skin strength and elasticity, is a protein.  A diet rich in sugar can create excess waste products in the form of glucose.  Instead of “burning off,” this glucose (sugar) attaches to proteins in our skin.  This process is classified as glycation, and leads to the formation of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), which increases inflammation in the body.  Inflammation breaks down collagen and leads to the loss of elasticity: in laymen’s terms, this means wrinkles, sagging and loss of tone.”1

Let’s recommit to watching for hidden sugars by reading labels and limiting refined sugars in our diets.  Instead, fellow healthy aging warriors, let’s add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains now that we know what’s good for our waistline is also good for our skin!

If you would like a personal consultation with me, Nancy Repanich, RN, please call 360-676-1111.  I offer complimentary visits where we can discuss your concerns in a private, comfortable environment.  Many options are available to help your skin improve so you can look and feel your best.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Laser Hair Removal for Folliculitis

October 26, 2010

One of the most popular treatments I do is laser hair removal for men and women suffering from razor bumps, redness, and folliculitis.  Are you one of millions who are tired of unsightly and uncomfortable red bumps in the bikini area or face/neck?  As the popularity of waxing and shaving these areas has grown, so have razor bumps, redness, folliculitis, and unsightly scarring and discoloration of the skin after infected areas have cleared.

Folliculitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the hair follicles.  I have seen patients that needed antibiotics and even surgery to treat their infections.  Staphylococcus aureus bacterium is the most common cause of the infection but sometimes it is due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungal infections.

Fortunately, laser hair removal is an excellent treatment for these irritations and infections.  Laser treatment can reduce and stop hair growth.  It also is great at killing bacteria, reducing hyperpigmentation and redness.  You won’t find waxing or electrolysis to be nearly as effective.

Laser hair removal/reduction is affordable and effective.  Most people find satisfactory reduction in 6 treatments.  Treatments are scheduled 3-6 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area.  My patients are amazed at how quickly their problem hair growth and skin infections clear.

Why suffer pain and embarrassment any longer?  I’d love to help you feel more confident.  Call me today at 360-676-1111 to set up a free consultation to discuss if laser hair removal is for you.    We are conveniently located in Bellingham, WA.

Top 5 Anti-Aging Vitamins

September 2, 2010

I recently read an interesting article on “The 5 Best Anti-aging Vitamins” in the Spring-Summer issue of Newbeauty.  We all know that vitamins are important when it comes to looking and feeling our best.  “We learn from a young age that the right mix of vitamins and minerals is a crucial component for total body health, but, as we grow older, they play an ever-increasing role in helping fo fight the signs of aging as well.”1  Dr. Joel Schlessinger, a Nebraska dermatologist says, “In general, for healthy skin, vitamins applied topically is the best route but oral vitamins can’t be discounted as they are an important part of the equation.”2

So what are the top 5 topical vitamins?

  1. Vitamin E- a powerful antioxidant which helps skin retain its natural moisture.
  2. Vitamin A- found in retinoids like Tretinoin and Renova.  It helps increase cell turnover which can decrease wrinkles, rough patches, fine lines, and brown spots.
  3. Vitamin C- a fantastic free-radical chaser that increases collagen, decreases brown spots, promotes wound healing and tissue growth.  Especially great for treating sun-damaged skin.
  4. Vitamin K- helps diminish the appearance of spider veins, under-eye circles, broken capillaries, and helps decrease bruising post-surgery or trauma.
  5. Vitamin B3 or Niacin-  helps skin retain moisture which strengthens our natural skin barrier.  Also functions as a mild exfoliator when used in products.

Now that you know the importance of these five anti-aging vitamins, you can look for them in everything from face wash to serums and incorporate them into your skin care routine.  We have several great products here at Puget Sound Cosmetic Laser that utilize these vitamins to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.  Find more information in the Spring/Summer 2010 Vol 6 Issue 2 of Newbeauty.  www.newbeauty.com .

Looking for Private, Personal, Training?

August 19, 2010

My blog is all about how we can increase our confidence and feel great through the best skin care and hair removal treatments.  I wanted to share another fantastic way to feel good….no….. feel GREAT!  Did you guess it?  Exercise!!

No folks, exercise is not a “dirty” word.  It is perhaps the best way to feel great, especially when you are motivated by excellent personal and private training.  My personal trainer of nearly two years is ACSM Health and Fitness Specialist, Patti Guarino, AAS.  I can’t say enough about how wonderful I think Patti is and what a difference she has made in my life.

I was one of those people who thought trainers were only for the rich and famous,  then I met Patti and she convinced me otherwise.  Not only do I feel better…..I look better.  My skin is healthier than ever and I have the strength and stamina to do more of what I want with my life.  Yes, I maybe 50 something but I know I am healthier today than I was 20 years ago.

Why am I sharing all of this with you?  Well…….Patti has opened a beautiful new studio in Fairhaven and is anxious to meet you at her grand opening September 1st from 5 pm to 9 pm.  She is located at 910 Harris St. which is in the Harris Square complex courtyard.  It’s the building right next to the gelato place.  There is plenty of parking in the courtyard and on McKenzie St.

I know she would love to have you stop by for some nibbles and drinks.  Plus, you’ll get to meet fabulous Patti herself in her wonderful new location.  You’ll love checking out all her “toys” and find out what it takes to get the marvelous “feel great” effects of exercise in a non-threatening, comfortable environment.  Hope to see you there!  She can be reached at 360.820.1664.  Her web site is www.apersonalview.com

I’m ready for hair removal….when can I start?

August 18, 2010

I’m seeing increased interest in laser hair removal in the past couple of months.  I think people spend lots more time in the summer worrying about and removing hair.  Unfortunately,  I have to tell far too many people that their tan skin precludes them from laser treatment.  After about 4 weeks of diligent sun protection, we can usually begin the treatment process.

Today, I thought I would provide a link to the excellent company that makes our laser and provides all the support that keeps our laser in tip-top shape.  Palomar Medical is a leader in the laser industry.  I invite you to visit their site for some amazing information about the company and laser treatment.   http://www.palomarmedical.com/treatments/hair-removal.aspx?_kk=laser%20hair%20removal%20machines&_kt=c5b10a0c-415d-4f13-a689-47f825052263&gclid=CLT9ro_cw6MCFRJNagod-H6-fA

  Thanks for you interest, Nancy

Laser Hair Reduction….AKA Laser Hair Removal

July 21, 2010

I hope you have all been enjoying our beautiful sunny weather.  Blue skies and warm weather turn on endorphines making most of us feel happier and in my case, a bit lazier!

Today, I’d like to remind my readers that laser hair removal /laser hair reduction /skin rejuvenation requires patients to be tan free.  When I orient my patients to the laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation process, I try hard to emphase just how important this is.  Unfortunately, people often forget and we end up rescheduling their appointment.

If you are currently receiving laser treatments or have plans to start, you will need to take steps to protect your skin so you can receive safe, effective treatments.  When skin tans, the darker skin pigment competes with intented targets like hair, brown spots, blood vessels.  As a result, side effects like hypo and hyperpigmentation, burns, and poor treatment outcomes can result.

Recent tans can be very problematic so I require my patients to avoid unprotected UVA/ UVB exposure.  This can be achieved by applying broad spectrum sunscreens before exposure and every two hours during exposure.  Hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing are also important.  Even self tanners and tanning beds/booths can adversely effect results.

If you are being treated in an unexposed area like underarms or bikini, staying tan free is easier.  Just remember to take precautions as needed.  Sometimes people ask if they will always need to protect their skin from the sun after receiving laser treatment.  My answer is, “I’d love  to see ongoing protection from UV rays but having had laser treatment will not mean you can’t ever expose your treated areas to the sun.  It will not effect hair reduction post treatment but it can mean more brown spots after skin rejuvenation”.

Enjoy your summer!  Call for a free consultation with me at Puget Sound Cosmetic Laser @ 360-676-1111.  I’d love to meet you and answer your aesthetic laser questions.

My Best,

Nancy R., RN

Brown Spots

June 30, 2010

Brown spots…….liver spots, age spots, sun spots, solar lentigines, sun-induced freckles are some of the many names for those pesky spots most of us will eventually discover on our bodies as we age.  They are benign (not cancerous) but can be a risk factor for skin cancer.  Brown spots are the body’s way of protecting us from excess sun or UV exposure.  They are found most commonly on areas exposed frequently to the sun like on our faces and hands.  Shoulders, forearms, and legs are also often affected.

Our skin pigment is related to the presence of melanocyte cells.  As we age and our skin is damaged by the sun, our melanocyte cells are no longer evenly distributed in our skin and may bunch up.   The result is the not so lovely brown spot.  There are other causes of brown spots like medications such as birth control pills, diseases, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, and genetics but UV exposure is the most common cause.

Fortunately, there are many treatments for this malady.  My favorite is using sunscreen with SPF of 30 or greater.  If we consistently use sunscreen, the brown spots we have may fade and new ones can be prevented.  Other topical treatments include kojic acid, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, green tea, hydroquinone and vitamin C serums.

Our Intense Pulsed Light laser at Puget Sound Cosmetic Laser is an excellent treatment for pigment and brown spot issues.  The laser works when its light is attracted to the spot(s).  The light turns into heat which disables the spot(s).  The spots will initially darken and one to three weeks later flake off.  Most people get satisfactory results in one to five treatments.  Pretreating with topical applications can help improve results.

If brown spots are bothering you, give me a call today @ 360-676-1111 to set up a free consultation where we can find a treatment that is right for you.

New and Better Sunscreens

June 8, 2010

I last wrote about skin cancer and today I’d like to focus on sunscreens.  Have you ever thought you or someone you knew were allergic to sunscreen?   Research and experience have revealed that all sunscreens are not created equally and many of us do have allergies or sensitivities to sunscreen.

The good news is that some newer sunscreens do a much better job protecting us from UV light and are less irritating.  The Skin Cancer Foundation is now addressing both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays and requiring labeling that tells consumers what they can expect from their sunscreens.  Of course, if you don’t routinely apply sunscreen as directed it doesn’t matter.  I tell my patients to think of sunscreen as UV screen.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, our sunny days are sometimes few and far between.  When I talk about sunscreen people often say, “It’s not sunny so I didn’t wear any today”.  My answer to them is, “If you can read a book in the amount of light you are exposing yourself to, you need UV screen,  AKA sunscreen”.  It’s time we get serious and think of tanned skin as damaged skin.  It is our body trying to protect us from UV light.

Did you know that UV screens are considered either organic or inorganic?  I’ll bet your first thought is that an organic screen must be the healthiest.  Actually, being organic doesn’t mean natural when it comes to sunscreens.  It means it is made of carbon, hydrogen, and other ingredients.  These organic or chemical sunscreens eliminate  UV rays by creating free radicals or unstable molecules that can damage DNA, depress our immune system, age us, and increase our risk of skin cancer.  There is growing research that organic sunscreens can effect our hormonal balance by mimicking the effects of estrogen.

For me, inorganic UV screens are a better choice.  These are the rocks or foundation that I use for UV protection.  Funny thing is……they really are made of rocks.  Physical UV screens consist of microscopic minerals that work by reflecting and refracting UV rays away from our skin.  People have very few allergic reactions to these inorganic screens.  The main ones you will see are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.  The rest of my weapons include: sun glasses, sun protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and basically seeking shade whenever I can.

When minerals have been micronized they are  stable, fragrance free, and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores).  My favorite sunscreen, oops…UV screen is made by Colorescience and is powdered sun protection.  It is easy to apply, doesn’t burn your eyes, is highly water resistent and offers full spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection.  I love their Sunforgettable powdered product that comes in a convenient tube with a brush and is easy for men and women to carry and use.

I’ll be you never knew there was so much to know about sunscreen/UV screen and I’ve only scratched the surface.  You will continue to hear more as people wake up and realize that it is up to them to protect their skin.  Time to stop using excuses like, “I’m allergic to sunscreen” and “I don’t like it running in my eyes”.  Call me today if you would like more information on the products we carry and ideas to help protect your skin.  Come visit us at Puget Sound Cosmetic Laser or call me, Nancy @ 360-676-1111.

May is Melanoma Month

May 13, 2010

Anybody that knows me or talks to me for more than five minutes knows I’m the Sunscreen Nazi.  I don’t even feel bad about it.  If I can get even one person to change their sunscreen and sunbathing habits, I feel my militant stance is worthwhile.  “Ya, ya, ya”….you say.  “I’ve heard it all before.”  “We don’t get that much sun around here so why worry?”  “Skin cancer is what other people get….not me.”  ”I feel better with a little color.”

Fact.  Skin cancer is the most common form of Cancer in the US.  More than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year.  (Skin Cancer Foundation)

Fact.  Melanoma is the third most common cancer in women ages 20-39.  (Skin Cancer Foundation)

Fact.  Exposure to tanning beds before age 35 increases Melanoma risk by 75 percent. (Melanoma International Foundation)

Fact.  Skin cancer is the number one cancer in men over age 50, ahead of prostate, lung and colon cancer.   (Skin Cancer Foundation)

Fact.  Approximately 59,940 will be diagnosed this year, with nearly 8,110 resulting in death.  (Melanoma International Foundation)

Fact.  Eighty percent (80%) of our lifetime sun exposure/sun damage occurs before the age of 18.  (The Skin Cancer Foundation)

Fact.  One person dies every hour from Melanoma.(Melanoma International Foundation)

Fact.  Skin cancer affects one in five Americans.  (Cancerpage.com)

Do I have your attention?  Okay, prevention isn’t that difficult.

  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 daily.  30 is prefered.
  • Wear protective clothing and accessories, such as wide brimmed hats and sunglasses.
  • Stay out of the sun during midday hours (10am-3pm) &/or seek shade whenever possible.
  •  Set a good example for children.
  • Follow the “Shadow Rule”- if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s damaging rays are at their strongest and you are likely to burn.
  • Avoid tanning salons or lamps.
  • Check your skin regularly and seek professional treatment from an experienced medical professional qualified to diagnose abnormalities.  (Suggestions from Colorescience)

If you have questions about how to protect your skin from UV light please call or e-mail me.  I sell several excellent sunscreen products that carry the Skin Cancer Foundation seal of approval.  Don’t let ignorance or indifference prevent you from taking action.  As a Melanoma survivor myself, I urge you to take precautions and seek medical attention if needed.  Your life or the life of a loved one depends on it!
